Today is Columbus Day, a state and federal
holiday.
The holiday started in 1792 as an Italian-American heritage
celebration in New York. The day was declared a federal holiday in 1937
by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
There will be no mail delivery today - Postal workers and other government bureaucrats are particularly fond of Columbus because:
- When he set sail, he didn't know where he was going.
- When he got back, he didn't know where he had been.
- He did it all using somebody else's money.
Oh, and somehow, along the way, he also managed to introduce smallpox to the Western Hemisphere.
