Cars and Trucks and Such

Yesterday, I got this interesting bit of information in an email:

Are you keeping your car or truck rather than trading it in? You're in good company then.

The average age of vehicles in the U.S. has hit a new all-time high. According to Experian Automotive, the average age of the 245 million vehicles registered in the U.S. in the first quarter of this year is now 11 years. In fact, 52 million cars and trucks in America are 16 years or older.
The email was from Marcus Lemonis, the president and CEO of Good Sam Club.  Granted, he was trying to sell me their extended warranty policy on our vehicles, but he does quote some interesting statistics.

Our vehicles are a 97 Toyota Avalon with over 240,000 miles on it,

and a 2007 Dodge Megacab 3/4 ton pickup with a Cummins diesel.

By the way, both of those pictures are from the internet.  Our Avalon has a sun roof, and the Dodge has chrome bumpers, vent visors on the windows, step-up running boards, and a two-tone paint job – mostly black with a silver strip along the bottom.

I only use the Toyota for occasional trips to the store and with 80,000 miles on the Dodge, that Cummins engine is just starting to get broken in.

The mean age of our cars is actually newer than the national average.
